Commencement Traditions Continue for the Class of 2009

Meet the Valedictorians and Salutatorins of the Class of 2009

(April 14, 2009) Superintendent of Schools Bernard P. Pierorazio announced today commencement ceremonies honoring the graduation of the Class of 2009 from four Yonkers high schools will take place at the Westchester County Center on Sunday, June 28th.

The District relocated the ceremonial venue from the County Center to Yonkers High School earlier this year because the proposed contract had significant increases over last year.  “After discussions with the County Center, a revised contract was offered that closely matches previous years' costs for holding the four ceremonies at their venue,” said the Superintendent.  “The more reasonable $2,000.00 increase over last year allows us to continue to provide our graduates with a location that has the extra seating available for family and friends who want to share in the achievement of their loved ones.” 

A key component of the Yonkers Public Schools cost containment strategy has been the renegotiation of vendor and supplier contracts to produce terms more favorable to the school district.  Describing the county’s offer as a “win-win” for everyone, the Superintendent will present the proposal to the Board of Education for consideration at its April 22, 2009 Stated meeting.

The revised graduation schedule for Sunday, June 28, 2009 at the County Center is:

• 9:00am Charles E. Gorton High School
• 12:00am Lincoln High School
• 3:00pm Roosevelt High School
• 6:00pm Saunders Trades and Technical High School

Yonkers High School will continue to hold its traditional graduation in the school’s Arena on Thursday, June 25th at 7:00pm.
