Grants for Lincoln Science Research Students

Lincoln High School Science Research students are able to earn up to 12 college credits at SUNY Albany.

Ten students in the Lincoln High School Science Research Program have been awarded grants from the Young Science Achievers Program to pursue their research. Students Wayne Scott (junior), Enrique Torres (sophomore), Alberto Cruz (junior), Natalie Moran (sophomore), Allison Moscol (sophomore), Desiree Nieves (sophomore), Quientin Figurres (junior), Nicholas Figueroa (junior) , Johnathan Soto (junior) , and Cateria Branch (junior) prepared and submitted research proposals to Young Science Achievers, which awarded over $900 in grants to fund the implementation of each individual student’s research.

The goal of the Young Science Achievers Program is to increase participation in science, engineering, technology, and math by underrepresented groups--young men of African American, Hispanic, or Native American descent as well as young women of any ethnicity. The Young Science Achievers Program is made possible by contributions from Princeton University and the National Science Fountation MIRTHE Center, AT&T Foundation, Alcatel-Lucent Foundation, African American Fund of New Jersey and the Karma Foundation.

Competition for grants is extremely competitive, and winning student proposals must meet rigorous requirements and be judged as having excellent potential for success. Students are required to submit final reports in May.

The Science Research Program began at Lincoln in 2007 under the supervision of Science Teacher Dean Saghafi, M.D. In addition to receiving the grant, this year the program achieved an important milestone with sponsorship from the State University of New York, Albany. Students in the program are able to earn up to 12 college credits, awarded by SUNY Albany, by participating in the program.
