Four Yonkers Public Schools Honored as Magnet Schools of Distinction
Eugenio Maria de Hostos Microsociety School, Montessori School 27, Paideia School 24 and Yonkers High School have been named Magnet Schools of Distinction by the national organization Magnet Schools of America (MSA). The schools will be honored at the 27th Annual Magnet Schools of America Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina April 26-29, 2009.
The four schools were selected based on their commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts, and the consistent delivery of high quality education to students.
Eugenio Maria de Hostos Microsociety School is a Pre K-5 school that infuses business and government concepts through all aspects of academic instruction and social skills. Like a real life community, the school has its own constitution, government, elected legislative representatives, and a municipal court to help students understand how government functions.
Paideia School 24 is a Paideia Demonstration School serving students in grade Pre K-5. The schools features a rigorous liberal arts education allowing students to develop the skills necessary to earn a living, think and act critically as responsible citizens, and continue educating themselves as life-long learners.
Montessori School 27’s program infuses a focus on Humanities & Creative Arts for students in grades Pre K – 6. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace and are engaged in individual and group activities with materials that have been introduced to them on a one to one basis by their teacher.
Yonkers High School is home to the International Baccalaureate Program, a rich liberal arts curriculum designed to prepare students for post-graduation entrance to universities in the United States and around the world. Yonkers High School was designated the top high school in Westchester County by US News & World Report.
Magnet Schools of America (MSA) is a professional educational association representing approximately 2,000 magnet schools nationwide. Magnet schools provide students with a valuable educational and personal experience, preparing them to function in a diverse society.
