Riverside High School won the 2010 New Jersey Regional FIRST
(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Competition held this weekend in Trenton. The students and their robot, R2 R.E.D. Reloaded, were part of a three-team alliance that took first place at the 61 team face-off. Amassing a record of 9-4-3 through more than 100 rounds of action, Riverside secured a spot in the 2010 FIRST International Championships at the Georgia Dome next month. Riverside and sibling team Saunders Droid Factory will be competing in the New York City regionals at the Javits Center this weekend.

At press conferences at City Hall and Lincoln High School, Mayor Philip Amicone, Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio and Board of Education President Bernadette Dunne joined city officials, educators, students, families and community members to speak with one voice in opposition to the proposed cuts in state aid to education.

US FIRST robotics team members have about six weeks to
transform a jumble of parts into a fully functioning robot that can navigate through tunnels and over bumps in a demonstration of engineering, science and technology skills. In a demonstration of character, Saunders High School robotics team members spent their free time at the Afya Foundation warehouse on Nepperhan Avenue transforming a jumble of parts into fully functioning wheelchairs that are giving people in developing nations the gift of mobility.

For one week in November a replica of the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial stood in Yonkers' Fleming Field honoring the 58,261 American dead from among the 2.7 million men and women in the U.S. military who served in the war zone. Yonkers students were among the visitors, and were the ones who stood watch over those who never came home. >> More
Mayor & Superintendent Testify About Impact to City & Students
Last month, Mayor
